Amcor secures RecyClass certification for PCR material to support upcoming changes to UK Plastic Packaging Tax requirements

Amcor a global leader in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, has achieved RecyClass Recycled Plastics Traceability Certification (EN15343) across a range of its flexible products manufactured at the company’s UK production sites in Ardeer, Bromborough and Winsford. These include Amcor’s NorDiVent®, ventilated form-fill-seal (FFS) films for cement, powdered building materials, chemicals and minerals; shrink films and stretch hood films for pallet protection; and a variety of FFS and flat film ranges containing post‑consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.

This latest milestone comes ahead of a significant change to the UK Plastic Packaging Tax (PPT) in April next year. From that date, only PCR material will be eligible for inclusion as part of the 30% recycled content threshold that qualifies a product for exemption from the tax. The use of post‑industrial recycled content (PIR) or pre‑consumer recycled content will no longer be accepted for meeting the threshold.
RecyClass is a comprehensive cross‑industry initiative that advances plastic packaging recyclability. It ensures that recycled content is independently audited, fully traceable throughout the production process, and aligned with recognized European standards. Amcor says this independent accreditation confirms the integrity, consistency, transparency, traceability and accurate accounting of its PCR content. This will give customers confidence that the packaging they are buying can support certification of sustainability‑related claims in an evolving regulatory landscape.
“As the use of recycled material increases across Europe, and regulations and specifications are further tightened, third‑party accreditation will play a vital role in ensuring the necessary transparency and consistency,” said Mike Baxter, Director, Government Relations UK & Recycling at Amcor. “This is why we are certifying both our sites and our products through recognized and respected bodies, such as RecyClass.”
